Navan

Navan ( Year Uaimh in Irish) is a city of the Comté of Meath in Irish Republic.

Its name means “the cave”, in Irish. It is the administrative capital of the county of Meath, the traditional capital being Trim. With a population growth of 51,6% between 1996 and 2006, it is the town of Ireland which knows the fastest progression.

Geography

Navan, located at the center of the county of Meath, is placed at the confluence of the river Boyne and the river Blackwater, with approximately 50 km in the North-West of Dublin and 20 km in the west of Drogheda.

With proximity, are the historic site of Tara and the archeological site of Brú Na Bóinne.

Demography

With the census of 2006, the town of Navan counted: 3710 inhabitants; by also taking into account the villages of suburbs, it represents an agglomeration of: 24851 inhabitants, which makes it tenth of Ireland of it. Its population increased by 28% since 2002.

Economy

Navan profits from the mines from Tared, the most important mines of Plomb and Zinc of Europe.

The traditional activities of Navan, the carpets and the pieces of furniture, are declining because this manufacture delocalizes in Eastern Europe.
