The profession of naval architect consists in conceiving a Navire, boat, or another floating structure. The design extends since the schedule of conditions given by the ship-owner, until the plans being used for construction.
If the whole of the techniques is similar, the approach will be different according to the program and the size from ship to be conceived: whereas only one architect (or a research department made up of some associates) could be in charge of a whole project for a small sailing ship, a maritime engineer will deal often only with one precise part of a ship.
The trainings of the French naval architects are varied, and raise mainly of engineering, and partly of architecture. Some schools of engineers propose specific trainings, but many architects come from a close die: Aeronautical Architecture, /hydrodynamic, design. A DPEA of naval architecture is proposed at the school of architecture of Nantes. However, most of the trade is learned “on the heap”, by the experiment and/or navigation.
A formation is offered to Southampton from where some left the great names of the modern naval architecture like several formations by correspondence to the United States (Westlawn). Concerning Quebec, DEC is offered to the Cégep de Rimouski leading to obtaining a title of technician in naval architecture preamble to a university training in marine engineering to Newfoundland.
In France, the oldest partnership is the ATMA, Maritime and Aeronautical Technical Association, which exists since 1889 (http://www.atma.asso.fr/index.html). There exists also the French Institute of the Naval Architects (IFAN), the purpose of which is more to federate the professionals of the medium than to create a “order” with the image about the Architects.
