Nausicaä National center of the Sea is a public Aquarium located at Boulogne-sur-Mer in France; it is one of the largest public aquariums of Europe (largest being that of Genoa).
Presentation
The mission of Nausicaä is “To make discover and better like the Mer, element of life and source of richness today and tomorrow. ” Nausicaä is described not only like a aquarium, but also like a Center of scientific culture and technical of discovered marine Environnement. It with the characteristic to be at the same time ludic, teaching and scientific, primarily centered on the relations between the Man and the sea. It includes/understands in particular giant aquariums, underwater explorations as well as a specialized media library, teaching films, temporary exhibitions, conferences, programs and animations in exposure.
The exposure occupies 5 000 m ² put in scene, allowing the visitor to traverse the oceans of the world and to carry out the implication of the human being in the operation and the balance of the oceans. One can thus observe the life in a Lagon, a coral Récif, into full sea, but also in a reserve California with sea lions; Nausicaä presents also teaching animations with Otarie S to tackle the problem of their wellbeing.
A new space of exposure called “Cape to the South! ” was open in April 2006. The visitors embark for a “voyage” of the Iceland to the Cape with the meeting of the Manchots of the Cape, in the company of Jean-Michel Cousteau and three children. In 1998, Nausicaä received the label of “Center of Excellence” by the intergovernmental oceanographical Commission of UNESCO for its publicity campaigns.
History

1981 : Guy Lengagne, mayor of Boulogne-sur-Mer, wishes to renovate the casino by refitting old interior spaces.
- 1982 : The Oceanographer S Philippe Vallette, Stephan Hénard and Christophe Liacopoulos are missionnés to carry out a pilot study and will be then in charge of the project. They are persuaded right now that it is necessary to create much more than one simple aquarium.
- 1984 : A Association law of 1901 is created and the architectural project is on the way.
- 1986 : Nausicaä obtains the label “Great project of State” and the Center of the Sea becomes the National center of the Sea. The Europe allocates 7 billion centimes to finance the project rising to 140 franc million. The invitations to tender for the realization of the building are launched. The breeding of fish in the museum of Main street starts.
- 1987 : Beginning of work.
- 1990 : Opening of the section “Sea cold” with the cods and arrived of Platax and Shark S at “Black Points”.
- 1991 : The Development company of the National center of the Sea is created. The National center of the Sea is renamed Nausicaä.
- May 18th 1991: Opening to the public.
- 1994 : Arrival of the first jellyfishes.
- 1995 : First temporary exhibition, “Sea and the child”.
- 1998 : Nausicaä doubles its surface, thus passing to 4 500 m ² of exposure. This extension, which accommodates approximately 10 000 new marine animals made it possible to create the reserve of the Sea lions of California as well as the Tropical Lagoon Village . This tropical zone makes it possible to observe the sharks or the coral reefs.
- 2003 : Arrival of the caimans in the “Immersed Forest”, new space integrated since the beginning of 2005 in “the Planetary House”, aiming at making reflect on the spending patterns.
- 2005 : Reception of the nine millionth visitor.
- 2006 : New extension including/understanding a new permanent space of exposure: “Cape in the South! ” and arrived of the penguins of the Cape.
- 2007 : Reception of the ten millionth visitor.
