Naupacte (in Greek old Ναύπακτος Naupaktos ) is old a quoted of Locride, in Greece, located on the septentrional coast of the Golfe of Corinth. With the modern time, it is called Lépante .

It is the mythical place from which the Héraclides for their return in the Peloponnese leave, where they build their boat. According to the Pseudo-Apollodore, it is from there that its name would come: of ναύς ( naus ), “the boat, the ship” and πήγνυμι ( pêgnumi , pêgnymi ), “to fix”.

History

After the medic Wars, Athens seizes some and installs there towards 456 av. J-C./455 av. J-C. exiled third war of Messénie. During the Peloponnesian War (431 av. J-C. with 404 av. J-C.), it is used as a basis naval to the Athenians, before being begun again by the Spartiates. Thereafter, under Philippe II of Macedonia, it belongs to the Étolie then, under the Romains, of Locride.

At the 9th century, it is the capital of the topic of Nicopolis and the seat of an ecclesiastical metropolis. It falls then in Venetian hands, which so strongly strengthen it that it resists, in 1477, with a four month old seat carried out by a Turkish army of 30 ' 000 men. In 1499 however, the troops of Bayezid II manage to take the city. The Battle of Lépante, in 1571, is held very close to this city. In 1678, the city is taken again by the Venetian ones in 1678, but they must return it to the Turks in 1699 following the Traité of Karlowitz. It becomes finally Greek in March 1829.
