Natural sign
In Musical theory, a natural sign is a Symbole graphic (), pertaining to the family of the deteriorations, whose function is to indicate on the partition that it is advisable to restore its natural height with a faded note previously ( diésée or bemolized ).
Effect of the natural sign
Contrary to the Sharp or the Flat, the natural sign is never a deterioration constitutive - except particular case of a change of armor.
Placé in front of a Note of music, the accidental natural sign again makes this one “natural” for all the duration of the measurement. The natural sign thus cancels all preceding deteriorations, which they are simple or double, constitutive or accidental.
Double-natural sign, natural sign-sharp and natural sign-flat
With an aim of exhaustiveness, let us mention that it formerly existed three double deteriorations based on the natural sign, now fallen in disuse because the natural sign which composes them is superfluous: the double-natural sign (), the “ natural sign-sharp ” () and the “ natural sign-flat ” (). They are detailed with the section double deteriorations of the page Altération.
Representation of the natural sign in data processing
The natural sign () is obtained in LaTeX by the order , or with character U+266E (hexadecimal, 9838 into decimal) (♮) concerned of Unicode characters.
