Natural satellites of Uranus

Uranus has 27 natural satellite known.

Discovered

The two larger satellites of Uranus, Titania and Obéron, were discovered by William Herschel on March 13rd, 1787. Two others, Ariel and Umbriel.

The overflight of Uranus by the probe Voyager 2 in January 1986 allowed the discovery of 10 additional satellites. Puck as of the end of the year 1985, then in the current of January 1986, Juliette, Portia, Cressida, Ophélie.

Caliban and Sycorax, Stéphano was it in 1999, Trinculo, Francisco, Ferdinand and Marguerite in 2001, Mab and Cupid

Names

All moons of Uranus bear the name of characters of works of Shakespeare and Alexander Pope.

Several Astéroïde S shares their name with some of the moons of Uranus: (171) Ophélie, (218) Bianca, (593) Titania, (666) Desdémone, (763) Cupid and (2758) Cordélia.
