Neptune has 13 natural satellite whose existence is confirmed.
Discovered
Triton was discovered on October 10th, 1846, only seventeen days after the first observation of Neptune. Néréide was it only in 1949. Before the arrival of the probe
To travel 2 in the system of planet, only Larissa was discovered (in 1981), with the favor of a Occultation of star; the moon could not however be observed again before the overflight of Neptune by the space probe.
The analysis of the photographs transmitted by Voyager 2 in 1989 made it possible to discover 5 new satellites: Naïade, Thalassa.
Halimède, Sao (S/2002 N 1 to 4) was, as their temporary designation indicates it, discovered at the time of the same programme of observation in 2002. Psamathée (S/2003 N 1), the last discovered satellite, was it in 2003.
List
Here the list of the known satellites of Neptune, classified by Equatorial radius growing. The numerical values come from data of NASA.
Names
Triton did not have official name before; although it was suggested since 1880 by
Camille Flammarion and was proposed independently by several other astronomers in wire of the years, it was not used in a common way before the years 1930, Triton being simply indicated like “the satellite of Neptune” (the second satellite was not discovered before 1949).
Two Astéroïde S share the same name as a satellite of Neptune: (74) Galatée and (1162) Larissa.
