Natural park of the Plains of the Scheldt

The Natural park of the Plains of the Scheldt or PNPE, officialized in June 1996 is during Belgian of PNR French Regional natural park the Scarpe-Scheldt, the first of the PNR instituted in France (in 1968) and more urbanized. These two parks form the transborder Natural park of Hainaut .

  • Surface: 26.500 ha

  • Population: 61.000 inhabitants approximately.
  • Situation: Basin of the Scheldt, South of Western Hainaut, near Turned, Lille and Mons, gathering six communes (either 37 old villages); of west in is, Rumes, Brunehaut, Antoing, Péruwelz, Belœil and Bernissart

Although victim of industrial, war and agricultural after-effects important, and of a ecological Fragmentation increasing (roads, highway, channels, TGV.), like its during French, it is an important zone for the ecological Réseau paneuropéen because of the cores of nature which were preserved there.

Operation

It is directed by an Agency fee of the Natural park which gathers 20 members representatives of the Communes, of the Province of Hainaut, the Division of Nature and the Forests and the Management of the Town and country planning of the Walloon region, of the French Community, the Walloon Superior council of the Nature conservation, as well as farmers, Nursery gardeners of Lesdain, Reserves Natural RNOB, Cercles of the naturalists of Belgium, Guides of the Park in the High-Scheldt, Wateringue S and the Rural Fondation of Wallonia.

They determine the implementation of the plane of management of the Natural park, which included actions of restoration and Nature conservation, of protection of the Environnement, Town and country planning, support for the agro-environmental Mesures, of education and sensitizing, development tourist, rural development and economic.

A multidisciplinary engineering team assists this commission and implements her orientations, with appropriations coming from the communities or other partners.

The park set up in 2007 a promenade of the summits.
