Nationalist Congress Party

The Nationalist Congress Party or CPC is an Indian political party . It is a party which wants to be national, but is primarily established in the Indian State of the Maharashtra.

It was founded in May 1999 by Sharad Pawar, old Chief minister of Maharashtra, P.A. Sangma and Tariq Anwar, after they were excluded from the Parti of the Congress because of their dissension with respect to the candidature of Sonia Gandhi for the head of the country, because of its Italian origins.

In January 2004, Sangma leaves the CPC because of the bringing together between the CPC and the party of the Congress, in spite of the fact that Sonia Gandhi remained with the head of the Indian principal party of opposition. The faction of Sangma joined the AITC then (All India Trinamool Congress).

The CPC is defined as a party progressist, layman, promoting " the democracy, the secularity of Gandhi, equity, social justice and the Federalism ". The electoral symbol chosen by the party is an alarm clock.

Since the general elections in India of 2004 for the renewal of the Lok Sabha, the Lower House of the Parliament of India, the CPC takes part in the coalition with the capacity, carried out by the party of the Congress. It obtained 9 seats (out of 543), all obtained in Maharashtra. One of its members, Praful Patel, was appointed Minister for the Civil aviation. Since November 2004, the CPC directs, with the party of the Congress, the State of Maharashtra.
