The National university of Lyon (or ENS Lyon ) is a scientific university French, belonging to the network of the National universities.
Created by Jules Ferry in 1882, the National university of Saint-Cloud had the role of training the teachers having to exert in the primary Teacher training schools. Arts persons and scientists cohabited there until the recasting of 1987 which founded co-education and decentralization.
Thus, the School was transferred to Lyon, in the district of Gerland, on left bank of the the Rhone. Like his/her cousins franciliennes, Ulm, Cachan and Fontenay-Aux-Roses (the antenna of Ker Lann did not exist at the time), it has from now on the role of training teacher-researchers and executives of the public administration.
The National university of Lyon is currently directed by Jacques Samarut administrator provisional following the resignation of Philippe Gillet in August 2007 after his nomination as principal private secretary of the Minister for Higher education and Research.
A hundred normaliens are thus formed each year, distributed in the various dies (the formation is remunerated during four years, with possibility of three years an additional financing for the pupils deciding to make a doctorate), whose majority obtain the aggregation and/or a Thèse of Doctorat. A hundred non-registered students (not having neither the statute of normalien nor remuneration consequently), resulting from scientific DEUG and IUT or the preparatory classes, also follows the courses exempted in the institution and receives the same diplomas (but cannot prevail itself of the statute of former student); they are sometimes called magistériens (of the name of the specific diploma of Magistère delivered by the ÉNS before reform LMD).
The ÉNS Lyon was joined in 2000 by ÉNS Lettres and Social sciences, resulting from the ÉNS of Fontenay-Aux-Roses, which was established to a few hundred meters.
