History

The University of Athens was founded the May 3rd 1837 and elected residence in the residence of the architect Stamatis Kleanthes, in the North-West of the Acropole. It was the first university not only of the young Greek state but also of all the Balkans and is the Mediterranean in general. The “ Université othonienne ” (of the name of the king Othon which was the instigator of its creation) consisted of four faculties: theology, right, medicine and arts (which included sciences and mathematics). It accommodated 33 professors, 52 students and 75 “listeners”. In November 1841, the courses started in a new building, the “ Propylea ”, drawn by the architect Danish Theophil Hansen.

It was re-elected in 1911 Université capodistrienne ” in homage to Ioánnis Kapodístrias. A major change in the structure of the university took place earlier seven years, in 1904, when the faculty of arts was divided into two distinct faculties: faculty of arts and faculty of sciences, this one made up of the departments of physics and mathematics and the school of pharmacy. In 1919, a department of chemistry was created and, in 1922, the school of pharmacy was re-elected in department of pharmacy. Later, the school of odontology was added in the medical college.

During this first “heroic” time of Greek education, faculties of the University of Athens made large efforts to fill the delay with the old universities of the other countries.

Between 1895 and 1911, thousand new students on average integrated faculties each year, number which amounted to two thousand at the end of the First World War. So one decided with the university beginning of the year 1927-1928 to set up examinations of entry for all faculties. Since 1954, the number of allowed students each year is fixed by the Minister of education and of the religion, on proposal of faculties.

In the years 1960, building work began on the campus from the University in the suburbs from Ilissia. The campus of Ilissia currently accommodates the schools of philosophy, theology and sciences.
