National unit of identification of the victims of catastrophes
The National unit of identification of the victims of catastrophes (UNIVC) is a French unit mixed National police force/gendarmerie, whose role is the identification of the victims of Catastrophe S.
The UNIVC is composed of:
- the UPIVC, unit organizes identification of the victims of catastrophes
- the UGIVC, unit gendarmerie of identification of the victims of catastrophes
This identification is often problematic because of the great number of victims and the bad condition of the bodies which does not allow a visual recognition. The recognition is thus based above all on clothing which the person at the time of the catastrophe, the distinguishing marks wore (like the Prothèse S, Cicatrice S or Tatouage S), digital fingerprints, palmar, ocular and dental as well as the genetic prints (DNA analyzes).
