The National theater Daniel Sorano (TNDS) is a room of theater located at Dakar. It is the national scene of the Senegal.

Its name pays homage to the actor free-Senegalese Daniel Sorano. The diffusion of its interpretation of Cyrano of Bergerac on television sénégalaise had indeed met a sharp success.

To note that several other scenes, for example to Toulouse or Vincennes, also bear this name.

History

The TNDS was inaugurated on July 17th 1965 by the president Léopold Sédar Senghor. The theater season had opened then by a tragedy in Wolof devoted to Lat Dior - the last Damel of the Cayor -, Lat Dior, or the way of the honor of Thierno Bâ, put in scene by Alioune Oumy Diop.

The theater was the subject of important renovation work in 1999.

Organization

The room can accommodate more than 1.000 spectators.

The unit includes/understands actually three independent but interdependent structures:

  • the national Whole of Ballet
  • the dramatic national Troop
  • the traditional lyric Unit
