National park of the delta of Saloum

Localization

It is located in the west of the country, on the coastal area in the north of the Gambia and occupies a significant part of the delta of the Sine-Saloum, a marshy labyrinth of Mangrove S and Bolong S.

History

The reserve obtained the statute of National park by the decree N° 76-577 of May 28th 1976. He was recognized like Réserve of biosphere in 1980, then classified like site Ramsar in 1984.

The candidature of the whole of the delta for its inscription on the Liste of the world heritage was subjected to UNESCO on November 18th 2005.

Environment

Principal the Biotope S observed is the mudholes with Mangrove and the Tanne S, the sandy coasts and small islands, the seamen circle, the wooded Savane Sudan ienne.

Fauna

The mammals are represented little there, but one however meets there Phacochère S, hyenas mottled ( Crocuta crocuta ), guibs harnessed ( Tragelaphus scriptus ), sylvicarpes of Grimm, some Lamantin S and especially of the monkeys Patas, in particular the Colobe bai ( Procolobus badius ).

Birds can be observed in all the park, in particular the dwarf Flamant ( Phoeniconaias minor ), the gray Pélican ( Pelecanus rufescens ), the Héron Goliath ( Ardea Goliath ), the Goéland scoffer ( Larus genei ), the Mouette with gray head ( Larus cirrocephalus ), the Sterne royal and Caspian, the dimorphous brush ( Egretta dimorpha ), the helmeted Bagadais ( Prionops plumatus ), the Barge with black tail ( Limosa limosa ), it Avocet ( Recurvirostra avosetta ), as well as thousands of Limicolous S Palearctic S.

The park also constitutes one of the most important zones of concentration of fish species (114) of the country.
