The national park of the Mount-Mégantic , of a surface of 54,86 km ², is located at the east of Sherbrooke, close to Our-Lady-of-Wood in the area of the Estrie. This park was creates in 1994 and is adjacent with the ecological Réserve Samuel-Brisson which is located at the North-East of this one.

The top of the Mont Mégantic includes/understands the astronomical observatory most important of the east of the Canada.

The park is managed by the Québécois government through the Société of the establishments of outdoor of Quebec (SÉPAQ).

Characteristics of the park

The relief of the park is characteristic of this area of the the Appalachian Mountains, the frontier mountains, although the solid mass is in fact Eastern of the montérégiennes. Three tops are accessible by paths from hiking, that is to say the mount Victoria (~1050m), the St-Joseph mount (~1075m) and the mount Mégantic (1105m). In addition, this last is the tenth plus high summit of Quebec and is highest accessible in the car.

The park is mainly known for its scientific observatory located at the top (thus raising it with 1111m). This observatory is the host of a Télescope with mirror of the type Ritché-Christian of 1,6m of the diameter, most powerful of the east of the North America. The site is mainly used by the Université of Montreal and the Université Laval which are the owners. If the conditions allow it, the observation with the naked eye is possible in the telescope of 1,6m at the time of the festival of astronomy of the Mount Mégantic, an event usually proceeding at the beginning of July.

In June 2007, following sustained efforts to reduce luminous pollution in the area of the Mount-Mégantic to summer declared reserve of starry sky.

Very close to the scientific observatory the popular Observatory of the Mount-Mégantic (CPM) is. Provided with a telescope 61 cm in diameter, it one of the largest observatories is dedicated to 100% with the public in the world. It is operated by ASTROLAB of the national park of the Mount-Mégantic.

Five hundreds lower meter is ASTROLAB of the national park of the Mount-Mégantic. ASTROLAB is a museum and a center of activities in astronomy dedicated to the public. Exposures attractive and a cinema of stars are found there. The come evening, under one of most beautiful the ciels spangled of Quebec, two public observatories, of many telescopes and other instruments of observation allow to discover splendors of space and the Universe.

Activitées sporting

In addition to a network of more than 50 km of path of hiking, the park contains also paths of ski touring, rackets and of bicycle of mountain.

Although not very frequent, of the favorable conditions of wind allows many deltists and parapentists to spring top of the St-Joseph mount.

The rise of the Mégantic Mount to bicycle is prossiblement most difficult in Quebec in addition to being the road highest of the province. Its high percentages on several kilometers give a good challenge to those which faces it. The Tour of Beauce (in the past Grand Prix of Beauce) was made in party know in the world of international cycling by this arrival in altitude which the organizers took the practice to include with the course with almost each edition of the event, in June.
