The national park of the Meeting is a National park French protecting the existing Endémisme on the island from the Réunion, a Overseas department in the Indian Ocean. Its existence is effective since the March 5th 2007.

Origins of the project of national park

The idea to create a Natural park with the Meeting was launched starting from 1992. Three years later, in 1995, the Charter réunionnaise of the environment and the Schéma of regional development fix the principle of the creation of this park in favor of the Sustainable development of the High , that is to say interior Montagne ux. It is decided that it will combine protection of the inheritance and economic Développement .

The November 6th 2000, the Minister for the Town and country planning and the Environnement announces the choice of the formula of the National park and launches the procedure for its creation. The February 7th 2001, the prefect, the president of the District council Paul Vergès and the President of the General advice Jean-Luc Poudroux sign the protocol for the creation of the National park Tops of the Meeting.

Studies are undertaken, and the mission begins an intense phase of dialog, meeting-debates, of communication and negotiation which leads to the adoption the March 12th 2003 by the steering committee of the Projet National park the Tops . It defines the principles for the creation of a “ national park of new generation”. The suppression of the mention to the Tops of the island takes place later, little before the Public survey carried out fine 2006.

The National park sees officially the day the March 5th 2007 per decree taken as a Council of State.

Effects of its implementation

The creation of the national park repeals the decrees on enforcement of a law of both natural reserves which existed hitherto with the Meeting:

• the natural reserve of Pond-Long , which protected since 1981 the Forêt from Long Pond, in the Tops of Saint-Philippe.
• the natural reserve of the Rock Written , located in the north of the island at horse on the communal territories of Saint-Denis and the Possession. Created with the turning of the Years 1990 and 2000, it protected the slopes from the Written Roche, a Sommet of mountain which culminates with 2.276 Mètre S of altitude and of which the heights shelter the Tuit-tuit, a endemic Oiseau forest of the zone.

Missions of the park

Whereas the National park of Guyana created at the same time as must rather protect the Biodiversité to him, the national park of the Meeting has the principal role to safeguard the Endémisme with the Meeting.
