National park of the Cevennes
The National park of the Cevennes is a National park located mainly in the department S of the Lozere (48) and of the Gard (30), like in less part in Ardèche (07) and in Aveyron (12). It thus extends on three areas: the Languedoc-Roussillon, the the Midday-Pyrenees and the the Rhone-Alps. Its head office is with Florac in its castle.
Origin
As of 1913, the speleologist Edouard-Alfred Martel and the Cevennes Club claimed the creation of a National park in order to preserve the inheritance of the area. The General advice of Lozere will start again this idea in 1956 and it was the September 2nd 1970 which the National park of the the Cevennes saw officially the day.
It is currently chaired by Jean-Paul Pottier.
Geography
Only national park French of medium mountains, the space of the National park of the Cevennes cuts out in two principal zones: a central zone and a peripheral zone . A vaster zone called Réserve of biosphere came to include the two zones forming the heart of the Park in 1985.
The Park itself thus constitutes a space of 321380 [[Hectare ha]] and gathers 117 common. It shelters of this fact a significant permanent population: : 41000 people live there in peripheral zone and 591 in central zone of conservation. Stockbreeders primarily, they maintain these highlands (more than 1000 m) in average altitude, true balconies of the the Mediterranean, the Mont Lozere with the Mont Aigoual, of the edge of the Grands Causses with the Cevennes valleys. The altitude of the Park varies from 378 m (French Valley) to 1699 m (Pic of Finiels, Mont Lozere).
