The National park of the Vanoise is located in the department of the Savoy in the solid mass of the same name which is between the valley of the Isere, the Tarentaise in north and that of the Arc, the Maurienne in the south. It is next to the Italian National park of the Large-Paradise along the border, with which it is twinned since 1972. The whole of both constitutes protected surface (1250 km ²) the most extended in Western Europe.

History

The National park of Vanoise was the first national park created in France in 1963. The main reason of its creation is the disappearance of the Bouquetin in the solid mass of Vanoise. This mammal with the long bent horns was exterminated as of the appearance of the firearms. In the solid mass close to the Large-Paradise, in Italy, there remained still a hundred animals when in 1823 one prohibits hunting of it. King Victor Emmanuel II created there a “royal reserve” in 1856, which became the National park of the Large-Paradise in 1922. In France a natural reserve is created in Vanoise in 1943 under the impulse of the alpine Club French, Touring-Club of France and the hunters. After many hesitations in connection with its surface or of the priorities given to nature and to the men, the national park was born in 1963, first French national park. It covers an immense territory where all is preserved: fauna, flora and mineral world.

Geography and relief

The Park of Vanoise presents a broken and imposing relief (107 tops exceed 3000 m), while being also crossed broad pastoral valleys generally allowing an easy access to the various collars. The park is an appreciated place of the hikers (passage of the GR5 and GR55), who come, at the beginning of Aussois, to benefit in particular from the glaciers and the many lakes of altitude, or the innumerable plant varieties indexed in the solid mass.

The culminating point is the Pointe of the Grande Breakage (3855 m) .
