National park of Lorentz

The national park of Lorentz is located in the province Indonesia of Papua (Western half of the New Guinea). With a surface of 25.056 km ², it is the large pus National park of Southeast Asia. In 1999, Lorentz was added to the Liste of the world heritage of UNESCO.

Lorentz is one of the richest national parks of the world on the ecological level. It is only natural reserve in the Asia-Pacific to offer all the range of ecosystem S, the marine zones to the Glacier S, while passing by the Mangrove, the marshy zones and the forest. With 4.884 meters, the Puncak Jaya (old Carstensz) is the mountainous top highest between the the Himalayas and the the Andes.

The park of Lorentz contains many not indexed and not explored zones.

Populations

The forests of the park of Lorentz extend on the traditional grounds from many ethnicities, of which the Asmat and the Dani. The strategies of management of the park will have to thus take into account the aspirations of these populations to effectively be able to protect its Biodiversité. The safeguarding of cultural diversity must thus be another objective of the management of the park.

Threats

The principal threats with the biodiversity of Lorentz come from the forestry development, of the conversion of forests into Plantation S and cultures, of mining and oil and the Braconnage of protected spaces. The Climate change is a new threat.

In 2005, there were not a report/ratio of forestry development or other important threats inside the park. There is no project of conversion of forests, and agriculture has a minimal impact.

On the other hand, the traffic of protected spaces is a serious problem.

A large gold and copper mine is in exploitation since decades in the west and the north of the park, but there is no activity inside the park. Oil exploration is led inside and to the North-East of the park.

The current general state of the biodiversity of the park of Lorentz is excellent. The various types of exploitation are nevertheless a threat, as well as the climate change.

Protection

In 2005, there was no guard nor of affected personnel in Lorentz. However, the success of the park depends largely on the support of the local populations. Many organizations of protection of nature work in the area of Lorentz.
