National park of Katavi
The National park of Katavi is a national park south-west of the Tanzania.
Geography
The park is located not far from the Lac Tanganyika, but at long distance from the principal cities and tourist centers of the country. It remains very isolated and deprived from infrastructures except for the track Kigoma - Mpanda - Sumbawanga which crosses the Eastern edge of the park. Although being the 3rd national park of the country by the size, it remains very little visited, only a few hundreds of tourists per annum, because of his great insulation. The park is mainly made of an easily flooded plain, at the bottom of a branch of the Vallée of the great rift. The many rivers descended from the plates run idly towards the Lac Rukwa, and in rain season overflow largely on kilometers, making abound the life in this plain. In dry season, the water holes which remain permanently are for the fauna of the area the only means of watering itself with tens of kilometers to the round.
Fauna
The marshes shelter the strongest population density of Hippopotame S and crocodile S of the country. In wet season, the park is famous for its birds, and more than 400 species are observable there.
In dry season (May at October), and because of the persistence of the water points, of large herds of mammals gather in their turn in the park. One finds there then up to 4.000 elephant S, of the thousands of buffalo S and Zèbre S, and several species of Antilope S (éland S, Impala S, hippotragues, Topi S), all followed by their usual procession of predatory.
