National park of Jökulsárgljúfur
The national park of Jökulsárgljúfur is located in the north of the Iceland at the edge of the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. It is between the site of Ásbyrgi in north, and the fall Dettifoss in the south.
The river is thrown on the falls Dettifoss and Selfoss and passes by the Jökulsárgljúfur throat. This throat, place of the national park of Jökulsárgljúfur, was formed by a rare event in the Histoire of the Earth: the eruption of a Volcano directly below a river. An enormous explosion tears the mountains of the surroundings then, formant of the characteristic chaotic structures. During the following centuries, the river engrava its bed in this tormented landscape.
The national park attracts the tourists by this fascinating landscape and its coloured mountains. The most beautiful mountain is Rauðhólar (“red hills”), whose color is due to the presence of iron oxides.
