The National office of the Forests ( ONF ) is a public corporation French in charge of the management of the public Forêt S, placed under the supervision of the ministry for Agriculture and Fishings and the Ministère of Ecology, the Development and Installation durable. The Head office is based with Paris.
The ONF is a public corporation related to commercial industrial and, whose statutes are defined in title II of the book first forest Code. It is armed with a board of directors as well as managing director named by decree.
The ONF ensures within the framework of this management, three main missions: production of wood, the reception of the public and the protection of the territory and the forest. He also has an activity of service provider for the management and the maintenance of natural spaces.
For 2008 the organization employs approximately 10 000 paid of which 6 673 pennies public statute (civils servant attached to the Ministry for Agriculture and Fishing) and 3 344 loggers and working forest of private law.
The ONF manages 120  on the whole; 000 km ² of public forests of which 44 000 km ² in Metropolitan France and 76 000 km ² in the overseas departments, essentially in French Guiana. The ONF also manages ecosystem S associated with the forest such as Tourbière S, Dune S, alpine lawns, for a surface of 5 340 km ².
