National office of the Forests

The National office of the Forests ( ONF ) is a public corporation French in charge of the management of the public Forêt S, placed under the supervision of the ministry for Agriculture and Fishings and the Ministère of Ecology, the Development and Installation durable. The Head office is based with Paris.

The ONF is a public corporation related to commercial industrial and, whose statutes are defined in title II of the book first forest Code. It is armed with a board of directors as well as managing director named by decree.

The ONF ensures within the framework of this management, three main missions: production of wood, the reception of the public and the protection of the territory and the forest. He also has an activity of service provider for the management and the maintenance of natural spaces.

For 2008 the organization employs approximately 10  000 paid of which 6  673 pennies public statute (civils servant attached to the Ministry for Agriculture and Fishing) and 3  344 loggers and working forest of private law.

The ONF manages 120  on the whole; 000 km ² of public forests of which 44  000 km ² in Metropolitan France and 76  000 km ² in the overseas departments, essentially in French Guiana. The ONF also manages ecosystem S associated with the forest such as Tourbière S, Dune S, alpine lawns, for a surface of 5  340 km ².

International activities

In 1997, the ONF started to develop an international activity in order to develop its know-how by creating the subsidiary company ONF International . This one is present in Latin America (Brazil, Chile…) and in Africa. ONF Brasil was created in 1999 in partnership with Peugeot and Pro Natura (an ONG free-Brazilian) to create a “  Well of carbon   ” in Amazonia.

History

The ONF was created in the form of a EPIC having the autonomy of management in 1966. It partly succeeded the Administration of National Forestry Commission created in 1291 by the king Philippe Beautiful the.

In addition to the legal change of status, the reform of 1966 relates to various other points, the main thing being the separation of the management of Water (reserved for the administration of the Agricultural engineering) and of the management of the national forests (attached to the ONF).

  • 1291 : Creation of the Administration of Water and Forests by Philippe Beautiful the.

  • 1661 - 1669: Colbert carries out a great reform of the royal forests in order to increase in quantity and quality the production of wood necessary to the royal Marine.
  • 1800 : Deforestation in France reaches its maximum (9 million hectares per annum).
  • 1827 : Publication of the forest Code.
  • 1850 - 1900: Great consecutive afforestations with large floods and landslides
  • 1966: Creation of the ONF, Public corporation related to commercial industrial and (EPIC)
