The National office of Transport (or ONATRA ) is a state enterprise of the Democratic republic of Congo, activates primarily in the west and the north of the country. She is based with Kinshasa. The railway exploitation and harbor, as well as the river transport constitutes its principal activities.

History

The state enterprise related to commercial industrial and is created in 1935 under the name of the Office of colonial transport (OTRACO). It is famous Office of transport in Congo (OTRACO) with independence in 1960. This one dissolved and is replaced by the National office of transport (ONATRA) in 1971.

In 1973, it reaches a maximum of 410.871 passengers transported.

The liberalization of the river transport, following a decision of the Executive council in 1977 withdraws the monopoly to him and authorizes any natural person or morals with becoming ship-owner.

The general degradation of its services and the competition cause a drop in considerably its passenger traffic (121 779 in 1982).

During the last wars the Congo river was blocked beyond Mbandaka. Since 2003, the traffic begins again little by little, until Kisangani, and in north by Ubangui.
