National museum of Prague
The National museum (in Czech: Národní muzeum (abbrégé in Nm ) is one of principal the Musée S of Prague. It occupies a building Néorenaissance located in top of the Place Venceslas, the principal one of Prague. Its central hall is also used as the Pantheon to the Czech great men.
History
It is founded in 1818, by Kaspar Maria von Sternberg inter alia, as patriotic Musée of Bohemia ( Vlastenecké muzeum v Čechách ). Starting from 1848, it carries the Czech name of Museum ( České muzeum ), then of 1854 with 1919 of Museum of the Czech Kingdom ( Muzeum Království českého ). The buildings occupied by the Museum are the work of Josef Schulz, the architect of the National theater builds at the same time (1885 - 1890).It dominates since nearly 150 years the Place Venceslas of Prague and is an inevitable symbol of the Czech culture and nation. In August 1968, following the Spring of Prague, its frontage is manifestly damaged by the shootings of the tanks of the units of the Warsaw Pact which invaded Prague and which give an opinion around the Czechoslovakian radio whose studios are located not far from there.
