The National museum of Mali is an archaeological and ethnological museum located at Bamako, capital of the Mali. It presents various permanent and temporary exposures on the Préhistoire to Mali, the costumes, the musical instruments, the ritual objects of the various ethnos groups living in Mali.

History

February 14th 1953 is inaugurated the Museum Sudanese, attached to the French Institut of Black Africa (IFAN) and more especially to its section of French Sudan. It was placed under the responsibility of the archeologist of Polish origin Szumowski.

In 1960, with the independence of the republic of Mali, the Sudanese Museum becomes the National museum of Mali. It has then like objectives to reinforce the unit of the country and to develop an authentic culture. The weakness of financial means and the absence of qualified personnel will have like consequences the deterioration of the collections.

March 8th, 1982, the National museum settles in new buildings built in stabilized bank value. The architect Jean-Wolf Pivin takes as a starting point the traditional architecture.

Distinctions

The National museum of Mali east prize winner of the Price Prince Claus 2007, given by the Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands, in homage to the work undertaken by the museum in the prevention of the plundering and the traffic of the cultural goods.
