The National library of Mali is a public Bibliothèque installed with Bamako with the Mali.

Exit of the French Institute of Black Africa created by the colonizing French become after independence the Institute of the social sciences, the Library of the government which becomes then National library, initially located at Koulouba, settles in 1968 in the district of Ouolofobougou.

Its missions are defined by a law of 1984:

  • To acquire, preserve and diffuse all current documentation having milked with all the sectors of the human activity;
  • To contribute, as an agent of the national literary inheritance, to make known, defend and better use the cultural values Malians;
  • To create and support the practices of reading;
  • To take part with all the organizations and associations public and private in the promotion of the book in Republic of Mali.

Its bottom, composed of 60.000 documents, consists of books provided by the editors (the Registration of copyright was instituted in 1985), of periodicals as well as sound, video and data-processing documents. These documents are consultable freely on the spot and can for some be borrowed.

It shelters since 2004 the African Maison of the photography which organizes biennial international African Rencontres of photography.
