National library and academic of Zagreb

The national library and academic of Zagreb (in Croatian Nacionalna I sveucilišna knjižnica U Zagrebu , shortened in NSK ) are the national library of Croatia, at the same time as the library of the university of Zagreb.

History

The foundation of the bibiothèque is related to the arrival of the Jesuits, which found a college (including/understanding a library) with Zagreb in 1606. The first catalog of the library goes back to 1610. Into 1669, the emperor Leopold I transforms the college into university: the library counts 5  then; 179 volumes but increases following gifts and by legacy. Most important is that of the historian Adam Krcelic (1715-1778) in 1777.

In parallel, the empress Marie-Therese founds in 1776 the royal Academy of sciences ( Regia Scientiarum Academia ): the library of the Jesuits is then attached there. She is opened with the public starting from 1818. Its national importance is stressed by the fact that it receives by registration of copyright any book published in Croatia (1837). She thus plays at the same time a part of national library and college library, and that until our days.

Second half of the XIXe century is that of the drafting of catalogs. When in 1874, François-Joseph founds a new university, it takes officially the name of College library. It counts 47  then; 000 volumes, two rooms of reading (for the students and for the professors) and opens six hours per day, the every day except Sunday. She moves first once in 1883 in the buildings of the new university.

But it is into 1911 that begin construction from a building which is especially dedicated to him, due to the architect Rudolf Lubinsky, in the style Art nouveau.

Croatia becomes after the First World War part of the Yugoslavia (initially kingdom of Serb, Croatian and Slovenien): she jointly receives the registration of copyright with two other libraries, while the number of students at the university very strongly increases. A law of 1960 specifies the role and the positioning of the library. Among the new tasks which are entrusted to him, that to prepare the Croatian national bibliography. In order to enable him to conclude its missions and to be modernized, the construction of a new building is decided in 1988: it opens in 1995.

The library plays the part of national library of Croatia since the country found its independence.

Functions and collections

The mission of the library is to promote the Croatian culture, research and sciences; it develops, preserves, preserves and emphasizes its collections. But as a library of the university of Zagreb, it is a library of research, with many books in foreign languages.

According to the new law of 1997, it thus must inter alia compiling, cataloguing, to preserve and give access to the collections entered by registration of copyright - including the electronic supports vidéos and data and to take care of the Croatian bibliographies current and retrospective.

The library counts approximately 2  today; 500  000 volumes, including 216 Incunable S, 67  000 pounds rare and 142  000 manuscripts.
