The national Paysages are a distinction created by the Department of the Environment of Finland in 1994. At the time of the 75e birthday of independence (1992), a broad consultation is launched to choose the most evocative sites of Finland, its culture, its history, its identity and the specificity of the landscapes.
The list of 27 places is proclaimed in 1994. For the majority, these places are déjá important national tourist attractions and some were major sources of inspiration of the artists as of the 19th century.
The landscapes are not delimited strictly, and the nomination does not give them any particular legal statute. It is just about a recognition symbolic system.
