The National laboratory of Rocky Flats is a generating station of nuclear weapons of the AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) which was operational of 1952 until 1988. This site is located close to Denver in the state of the Colorado at the the United States.
In 1957 the site comprised 27 industrial buildings. It underwent the same year an incident with a fire and a contamination of the building n°71.
Another important fire occurred in 1969 on another building. Because of the risks of contamination, many protest demonstrations were organized by the opponents in the years 1970.
The administration decided into 1983 to trace a safety zone around the site.
Then several incidents of violation of the rules of safety occurred in 1988 and 1989. This caused the stop of the production of plutonium and questions by the Congress. The site was the subject then of an in-depth survey of its operation by the FBI before taking again a limited activity.
In the years 1990, the dismantling of the Soviet Union intervenes to make obsolete the massive production of the weapons nucléaires.
In the year 2000, the Congress proposed to transform Rocky Flats into a refuge for the wild life while returning the 25 km ² of the site after its cleaning and its closing.
