The National laboratory of Oak Ridge (in summary ORNL ) is a multi-field laboratory for science and the technology which is directed by the Laboratoire C-Battelle on behalf of the Department of the Energy of the United States (DOE).
The laboratory is installed with Oak Ridge in Tennessee close to the town of Knoxville.
Mission
Currently, the scientists and the engineers of the site make basic research and applied to improve knowledge and to acquire an expertise in the scientist fields and technological permetant to improve the energy supply, to protect the environment and to contribute to the nuclear security.
History
The installation was created at the origin within the framework of the Projet Manhattan in 1943, during the 2nd world war when the American policies and scientists were frightened possibility by the Nazi Germany of developing weapons atomiques.

The laboratory and the town of Oak Ridge were built in less than one year in an isolated region on farms located in the mountains of the east of Tennessee. Oak Ridge became a secret city under the name of
Site X where came to settle 75000 residents in less than two years.
