National laboratory of Idaho

The National laboratory of Idaho is a site of 2300 km2 located in the desert of Idaho between the towns of Arco and Idaho Falls.

Successive designations

This site was created in 1949 under the name of:
  • "National Reactor Testing (NRTS) Station".

In 1975, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was divided into two parts: " Energy Research and Development (ERDA)Administration" and " Nuclear Regulatory (NRC) Commission". The site of Idaho was called during a certain time " ERDA" before becoming:

  • "National Idaho Laboratory" (INEL) Engineering;
following the creation of the " Department off Energy" (DOE) in 1977 pennies the mandate of the President Carter.

In 1997, the name is changed once again into:

  • "National Idaho Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). "

In February 2005, Battelle Energy Alliance took again the activities of laboratory of Bechtel, amalgamated with " Argonne West" , and taken the name of:

  • "National Idaho (INL) Laboratory."
To date, the activities of decontamination were moved in a new independent entity Idaho Cleanup Project directed by " CH2M-WG Idaho". The research activities were left at the new laboratory " National Idaho Laboratory" who currently employs 8000 people.
