National laboratory of Hanford

The national laboratory of Hanford occupies approximately 1,517 km in the state of Washington.

Production of plutonium

This laboratory was founded in 1943 during the second world war within the framework of the Projet Manhattan to provide the Plutonium necessary to the development of the atomic bombs.

This laboratory bore the name of Site W within the framework of the project Manhattan.

The plutonium produced on the site of Hanford was used to build the first nuclear bomb which was tested on the site of Trinity close to Alamogordo in New Mexico, and was used with Fat Man, the bomb which was launched on Nagasaki in Japan.
