National happiness gross

The National Bonheur Gross (BNB) is an attempt at definition of the Standard of living in more psychological terms and holistic that the Rough National product.

This index was recommended by the king of the Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck in 1972. Its goal being to build an economy which would serve the culture of Bhutan based on spiritual values Bouddhiste S. Among other moral objectives, it is used to guide the establishment of economic plans and development for the country.

An alternative index

It seems an index including (in a rather broad way) the Gross domestic product (GDP) or the Indice of Human development (IDH) which appear insufficient measuring the happiness of the inhabitants of a country. This index rests on the four basic principles to which the government of Bhutan attaches an equal share:
  • Growth and economic development;
  • Conservation and promotion of the culture;
  • Safeguard of the environment and durable use of the resources;
  • responsible Good governance.

Conferences

An International Conference on the BNB was taken place in Nouvelle Scotland in June 2005, an event to which the Buddhists Shambhala S attach a special significance.
