National gallery of Arménie

The National Galerie of Arménie is the principal museum of Erevan, capital of Arménie. It is located on the Place of the Republic, one of the nerve centres of the city.

History

In 1918, is founded the first republic of Arménie on the grounds located at the foot of the Mont Ararat and around the Aragats. Consequently, the exiled Armenians of the whole world arrive in them new country and Erevan quickly obtains an educational university and other institutes. Thereafter, with the sovietization of the country, the National theater, the academy, the Opéra and the museum are built.

The building was completed in 1921, at the time of the construction of the city by the Tamanyan architect. Consequently the gallery was born, defined as the artistic section of the museum of State . To its beginnings, the organization is entrusted to the painter Martiros Sarian. This one having left Rostov-sur-le-Don to accept its mission, organizes the first exposure with its propores works. A little later it is the collection of paintings of the Lazare college of Moscow which is returned to Erevan.

Into 1935, the artistic section is transformed initially into Musée of art then in Galerie of State d' Arménie in 1947 to become finally the National Galerie of Arménie to the independence of Arménie in 1991. Meanwhile, the museum is increased and a new section, larger, opens in 1978.

Since its beginnings, the gallery conctituée an important collection with blows of purchases and gifts. The list of the givers is available on the site of the gallery.

Structure

Like many buildings built at the beginning of the century to transform Erevan into capital of Soviet republic worthy of the leaders of Moscow, the architecture of the National Gallery respects the neo-classic style imposed by Alexandre Tamanyan. The large building with the black frontages in the beginning throne literally on the very new place of the Republic.

In 1978, the black Tuf of the first two stages is replaced by white stone and in same time, a new section of 8 stages of exposure is added, making the building even more massive.

Collection

The majority of the collection of the Gallery comes from donations of Armenians of the diaspora. She is the major collection of works of Armenian artists in the world.

One finds there mainly tables of Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Sylvestre Shchedrin or Theodore Rousseau, Monticelli, Of Penia and Eugene Boudin for the section " Art of Europe occidental".

The permanent collection includes/understands also drawings, engravings, sculpures and works religious.
