National day of the tree
The national Journée of the tree was instituted with the Bénin in 1985. Celebrated on June 1st, it is the occasion for the public authorities of sensitizing the populations by inviting them to plant a tree in order to limit the effects of the Désertification.
June 1st 2005, Fatiou Akplogan, Minister for agriculture, the breeding and fishing indicated that since 1985,63 614.852 trees were planted through the country, covering a surface of almost 80.000 hectares during this day the purpose of whose institutionalization is “ to slow down the destruction of forest cover and to support in the long run the satisfaction of the needs for the populations in forest products, pastures for the animals and to promote the urban afforestation ”.
