The National company of the Rhone (CNR) is a producing French company of hydraulic electricity of origin. With public majority (50.05%), its principal shareholder (49,95%) is the company Electrabel, subsidiary company energy of the group Suez. The Deposit and consignment office CDC holds 29,43% and various local government agencies 20.62% of them. Created in 1933, it exploits 19 hydroelectric stations built on the course of the the Rhone. This company is completely independent of EDF since 2002 and constitutes its first competitor in the market of the electricity in France. Its production rises to 16 billion kWh per annum, that is to say less than 3% of the production from EDF, but approximately 25% of the French hydroelectric energy production.
The company was charged, at its origin, with organizing the hydraulic installation of the Rhone for an electric production. The dams Génissiat, Donzère-Mondragon, Seyssel and Chautagne, exploited before by EDF, are the principal installations.
