National company of protection of nature

The National company of protection of nature (SNPN) is a French association the purpose of which is protection of the Espèce S Animal are and vegetable wild as well as the natural environments.

Founded the February 10th 1854 by Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, under the name of zoological imperial Company of acclimatization , it is recognized of public utility as of the February 26th 1855. After the fall of the Second Empire, it becomes the National company of acclimatization . Vis-a-vis the development industrial and the destruction undergone by nature, the concerns of its members evolve/move. Of 1901 with 1921, under the presidency of Edmond Perrier, director of the national Natural history museum of natural history, the company turns resolutely to protection of nature. In 1906, it inspires the creation of the Société of the friends of the elephant . In 1912, the Ligue for the protection of the birds constitutes under its aegis for creation of the ornithological reserve of the Seven Islands. In 1923, it Co-organizes the first international Congress of protection of nature to Paris. The company is Co-founder of UICN in 1948. She takes the current denomination of National company of protection of nature in 1960.

The policy of protection of the company was concretized very early by the creation and the management of reserves. In 1927, it creates the zoological and botanical reserve of the Camargue on private grounds which it rents. She was the first reserve to be distinguished by the the Council of Europe in 1967. The state, become owner of the 13  117 hectares of the reserve, confirms the SNPN as manager in 1975. The national Réserve of the Camargue obtains the title of Réserve of biosphere by UNESCO in 1977. In 1935, the company creates the reserve of Néouvieille in the the Pyrenees and that of the Lauzanier in the the Alps. Integrated in national parks, the SNPN does not ensure of it any more management today. In 1980, the SNPN becomes manager of the 2  700 hectares of the Reserve of the Lake Gran Place in Loire-Atlantique at the express request of the giver.

As of 1931, the company publishes quarterly the the Earth and the Life which will become the Revue ecology (Earth and Life) intended for a scientific public. In 1967, it creates the mail of nature , a two-monthly general public. In 1993 begins the specialized publication Wetlands Infos .
