In 1946, in partnership with the general government of the Algeria, BRP (Elf Aquitaine) creates the National company of Search and Oil Exploitation in Algeria (S.N. REPAL) whose seat is in Hydra in top of the town of Algiers. One of its principal establishment will be that of Hassi Messaoud in which SN REPAL discovers oil in June 1956.

In April 1960, the General union of oils is born officially. The UGP is formed of the autonomous Control of oils, SN REPAL and the Grouping of the oil owners (GEP) who hold each one a third of the capital.
