National center of the cartoon and the image

The National center of the Cartoon and the Image ( CNBDI ), located at Angouleme (Charente) is an organization of State depend on the Ministère of the Culture French dedicated to the Cartoon and the images. At the same time, Museum, place of exposure and more and more, training company, tool for creation, support of economic development in the field of the digital image.

According to the ministry for the Culture, it is classified “Museum of France”, within the meaning of the law n°2002-5 of January 4th, 2002.

History of the CNBDI

In 1974, is launched the International festival of the cartoon, with Angouleme in Charente. In the Years 1970 and 1980, collections of original boards are gathered and preserved at the Museum of Beautiful arts of Angouleme. In 1983, the Museum opens the gallery Saint-Ogan, named thus in homage of one of the fathers of the French cartoon, author of the series Zig and Puce . This gallery presents the collection of original boards in a modern museography, carried out by the group of plastics technicians Art Edbus.

In 1984, Jack Lang, Minister for the culture announces that within the framework of great work of the president of the Republic François Mitterrand, a National center of the cartoon and image in Angouleme intended to shelter a museum, but also a media library and a center of numerical imagery will be built. In 1985, the team trained by Roland Castro and Jean Remond carry the contest of architects. It envisages the rehabilitation of an unused industrial building (that of the Champigneulles Breweries) chosen by the town of Angouleme, on a site already turned towards the culture and the communication, since were established there the School of art and the Workshop-Museum of paper.

In 1989, is created the numerical Department of imagery (D.I.N.) which will become in 1996 the numerical Laboratory of imagery (L.I.N.).

The CNBDI is inaugurated in 1990 at the same time as is open the library of the cartoon and one can discover the most important exposure ever presented to the CNBDI and Angouleme, in term of surface and scenography, “the museum of the shades”. It occupies space reserved for the future Museum of the cartoon, who is open in 1991.

From now on the CNBDI is implied in an important collaboration with “Magelis, the Pole image of Angouleme”. It is the day before a new development which will enable him to be more strongly anchored within this pole by tripling its surface and its capacity and to become thus the “vessel of the drawn images” of the 21e century.
