National Urban League

The National Urban League or NO ONE (literally “Urban National league”) is a neutral organization based with New York, and militant in favor of obtaining the Civic right . Created on the initiative of the Afro-American S, victims of Racial segregation, she condemns any racial form of discrimination to the the United States. It is oldest and most important of the organizations of this kind of the country, and it is currently directed by Marc Morial. Like other organizations of the same kind, she played a big role in the district of Harlem, with New York.

History

Formation of the organization

The “committee on the urban living conditions of the Blacks” ( Committee one Urban Conditions Among Negroes ) was created with New York on September 29th 1910 by Ruth Standish Baldwin and Doctor Edmund Haynes, inter alia. It amalgamated with the “Committee for the improvement of the work conditions of the Blacks” ( Committee for the Improvement off Industrial Conditions Among Negroes ), him also founded with New York in 1905 then with the “National league of protection of the coloured women” ( National League for the Protection off Colored Women ), founded in 1906. The organization was thus famous National League one Urban Conditions Among Negroes , i.e. “National league for the urban living conditions of the Blacks”. NO ONE developed thanks to this movement, at the base spontaneous of fight for the freedom which was called the Great Migration , i.e. the Great Migration.

In 1918, Eugene Jones took the head of the organization, and under its direction, the League significantly extended its countryside to the multiple facets to break the obstacles with the use of the Blacks, boostée by the first boom of the Années 1920, and then by the difficult years of the Grande Depression. In 1920, the organization acquired its current name of National Urban League. The mission of the movement of l' Urban League is to make it possible the Afro-américain S “to obtain their independence finanièree, the parity, the capacity, and the Civic right ”.

The Civil Rights Movement

In 1941, Lester Granger was named Executive secretary, and led the members of NO ONE to take part in walk on Washington, organized by Asa Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin and Abraham Johannes Muste to protest against racial discrimination in the defense work and the armed forces. During the Movement Afro-American of the civic rights of 1955 to 1968, its insistence so that NO ONE continues strategy of “education and persuasion” prevailed.

In 1961, Whitney Young became executive director into full during the explosion with the Civil Rights Movement which caused a change in the strategy of the League . The young people extended considerably the capacities of collection of funds of the organization, and made to League a privileged partner of the Movement of the civic rights. In 1963, NO ONE accommodated the meetings of organization of Asa Philip Randolph, Martin Luther King and other leaders of the movement before the Marche on Washington. During the ten years of prevalence of the young people, Young initiated a program similar to Street Academy , system alternative of education aiming at preparing the pupils who left the Lycée S ( high schools ) with the colleges , as well as the program New Thrust (New push) to help the local black leaders to identify and solve the problems of the community. The young people also made pressure to obtain federal assistances for the city.

Recent evolution

In 1994, Hugh Price was named with the head of Urban League at one critical time for the organization, the Afro-américain S, and the country as a whole. In 2003, Marc Morial became the eighth president of the League , just as its Chief executive officer . Since its nomination, Morial worked to give again energy with the various voters, while being based on the forces of the heritage of NO ONE, 95 year old old man, and by increasing the establishment of the organization, at the same time the local scales and main road. Today, one counts more than one hundred subsidiary companies of the National Urban League, located in 35 States and the District of Columbia.
