National Historical park and Reserve Jean Lafitte

The National Historical Park and Reserve Jean Lafitte ( Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserves ) are an American National park which protects from the significant examples of the rich person natural resources and cultural of the Delta of the Mississippi in Louisiana. The park, of the name of the flibustier Jean Lafitte, seeks to illustrate the influence of the environment and the history on the development of a single regional culture. It consists of six sites physically separated and a center of visit located in the French Quartier (or old square ) from La Nouvelle-Orléans.

Acadie

Three sites help to interpret the acadian culture in this zone:

  • the Farming Acadian Center , with Lafayette;
  • the Meadow Farming Acadian Center , with Eunice
  • the Wetlands Acadian Farming Center , with Thibodaux

Reserve Barataria

The Barataria Reserve, located at Marrero, is based on the cultural and natural history of the area. The reserve proposes paths of Randonnée and courses of Canoë in the forests and the marshes.

Chalmette

With Chalmette, with approximately 10 kilometers in the south-west of New-Orleans, are the battle field of Chalmette (see the article Bataille of New-Orleans) and the National Cemetery of Chalmette, place of rest of the combatants of the American Civil War, of the Guerre Spanish-American, the Première and Second world war and of the Guerre of Vietnam.

French district

To the 419 Decatur Street, in New-Orleans, in the French District, is held the center of visit of the park, centered on the history of the city and the various cultures of the area of the delta of the Mississippi. The city also shelters the administrative center of the park.

Administrative history

The Chalmette Monument and Grounds is created on March 4th, 1907 then transferred from the Department of the War to the National Park Service on August 10th, 1933. It takes the name of national Chalmette historical park on August 10th, 1939. It appears in the National Register of the Historical Places since July 11th, 1974. Chalmette is incorporated in the new park Jean Lafitte on November 10th, 1978.
