National Assembly of Senegal

The National Assembly of Senegal is the Lower House Parlement of Senegal. Its seat is with Dakar (Senegal).

History

The National Assembly of Senegal was instituted by the law n° 60-44 of August 20th 1960.

She occupies the building located on the Soweto place, which had accommodated other institutions as a preliminary. Inaugurated on November 22nd 1956, it lodged the Large Council of the French Western Africa (AOF) of 1956 with 1959, then the legislative Parliament of the Fédération of Mali from April 4th, 1959 to August 20th, 1960. The number of deputies varied during the history. At the time of independence they were only 80, then their manpower passed to 100 in 1978, 120 in 1983 and 140 in 1998. In 2001 it was brought back to 120 and the eleventh legislature opened by the elections of June 3rd 2007 accommodates from now on 150 of them.

Organization

The National Assembly divides the Legislative power with the Sénat, restored in May 2007 after a suppression of several years.

150 deputies sit there from now on. They are elected with the Vote for all direct, for one five years duration. The poll is majority with a turn on the level of the departments to the amount of 90 deputies and proportional on a national list to the amount of 60 deputies.

The elections are dissociated from the presidential election.
