The National Assembly of Quebec is the elective room of the Parlement of Quebec. Since the abolition of the Legislative council in 1968, the National Assembly of Quebec holds all the legislative powers inside the jurisdictional framework of the Canadian provinces as defined by the Constitution of Canada.
The building where the members of Parliament meet is the Hôtel of the Parliament of Quebec. Its current president is Michel Bissonnet, appointed liberal of Jeanne-Mance-Viger.
The National Assembly of Quebec east one of the oldest parliamentary institutions in the world. Indeed, its first session opened in 1792, with Quebec, in what then was called the Province of Low-Canada.
The Parliament of Low-Canada was abolished by the British government following the rebellions of the patriots. Between 1840 and 1867, the provinces of High-Canada (today the Ontario) and of Low-Canada (today the Quebec) were linked and divided the even Parliament. With the Act of British North America, the Parlement of Quebec was restored.
In the beginning the Parliament of the province of Quebec consisted of two rooms: the legislative Parliament and the Legislative council. The first was made up of the deputies elected by the people for one period of approximately four years and the Legislative council was made up legislative advisers appointed for lives by the Prime Minister.
In 1968, the government of Jean-Jacques Bertrand adopted the law 90, which abolishes the Legislative council and re-elected the legislative Parliament the National Assembly. Before this date, several attempts at abolition of the Legislative council had shown failures.
The National Assembly of Quebec is a parliamentary institution of British type (functioning according to the Système of Westminster) with some characteristics, most outstanding being that its work proceeds in French.
The Québécois territory is cut out in 125 electoral constituencies. general elections take place at least once every five years. They are started by a decree of the Prime Minister at the time of his choice. The deputies are elected with the majority vote with a turn. Since at least the Years 1960, a reform of the Way of voting is promised with the Inhabitants of Quebec; however, none the reform projects succeeded to date. Recently, a referendum on the reform of the way of voting, in front of proceeding at the same time as the general election of 2007, had been proposed by the minister Benoît Pelletier, but this project was abandoned.
The government is consisted the majority party and it is responsible in front of the representatives for the Québécois people.
Conceived by the architect Eugene-Etienne Stained and built between 1877 and 1886, the current building is the third to bear this name to Quebec, after that which was undertaken in 1831 and that which was built between 1859 and 1860. To build the Hotel of the Parliament, the architect took as a starting point the topic I remember which is the currency of Quebec today.
