Nathaniel Brown Palmer (1799 - 1877) was a captain of navy American and considered as Co-discoverer of the the Antarctic.
Born in Stonington in the Connecticut, it engages very young person in the navy as sailor. It becomes ship master (owner) as of the 19 years age. During a hunting campaign for the whale in 1820 in trimmings of the the Shetland of the South, on board a sloop of 47 feet, the " Hero ". It decides to venture more in the south with research of new colonies of young seals for hunting.
Co-discovery of the Antarctic
The November 17th 1820, it discovers a ground not indicated on the charts. During the same time, a Russian boat of the imperial navy ordered by Fabian Von Bellingshausen sails in this zone as well as a ship of the Royal Navy British ordered by Edward Bransfield. These 3 people are regarded as the Co-discoverers of the Antarctic. During this forwarding, Palmer will also discover the named islands the the Orkneys of the south.It will continue then its career as commander then originator, manufacturer and finally owner of Clipper S. It dies in 1877, at the 78 years age. He is buried close to his house victorienne of Stonington which was transformed into museum.
The ground which he will have discovered will be called Palmer Land before the British does not rename it in Graham Land. It is known maintaining under the name of Péninsule Micrometer caliper. The name of the captain was also given to the Archipel Micrometer caliper, at an American scientific station, the Station Micrometer caliper located in one of the islands of this archipelago and with an American ice-breaker, RV Nathaniel B. Micrometer caliper.
