Nathan Solomon Calisch , born with Amsterdam on June 23rd, 1819 and died in 1891, was a journalist and lexicographer Dutch. He was the brother of Elias Marcus and Isaac Marcus Calisch.

Biography

Calisch was initially teacher, then was devoted to journalism; as from 1850, he was joint editor as a chief of the Amsterdamsche Courant and of 1883 to 1888, he collaborated in the Handelsblad .

He was secretary of the Nederlandsch-Israelietische Armbestuur (the “Public assistance Jew Dutchwoman”) and of the Algemeen Beurscomité voor Publieke Fondsen .

Works

He collaborated in the development of many dictionaries; he also wrote:
  • Handleiding early of kennis DER voornaamste rivieren van den aardbodem (Amsterdam, 1840)

  • De Amsterdamsche strafverordeningen (Amsterdam, 1861)
  • Liefdadigheid van Amsterdam (Amsterdam, 1852)

Moreover, it translated many books, inter alia Alphonse Esquiros, Luise Mühlbach and Eugene Scribe, and written schoolbooks, contributions in reviews, etc

All the dictionaries of his/her brother Isaac Marcus were carried out with its collaboration.
