Nathan Milstein
Nathan Milstein (born the December 31st 1903 with Odessa, dead the December 21st 1992 with London) is a Violoniste of Russian origin having adopted American nationality in 1942 after having passed most of its life to the the United States.
Biography
Forced by his mother to take courses of violin as of the 4 years age, he studies initially with Piotr Stolyarsky (also the professor of David Oïstrakh). 10 years already, he plays the Concerto of Glazounov under the direction of the type-setter himself. The following year, it is invited to study with Leopold Auer with the Conservatoire of Saint-Pétersbourg.
He returns in Odessa in 1917 when Auer leaves Russia for the Norway, and leaves in 1921 for Kiev where he meets Vladimir Horowitz, with which he binds friendship. They leave together for a European round in 1925 as cultural ambassadors the Soviet Union. Milstein will never turn over in its country, living initially with Berlin, then with Brussels, where he studies with Eugene Ysaÿe. Milstein makes its beginnings in the United States in 1929: turned with Horowitz and the violoncellist Gregor Piatigorsky, it played on a Stradivarius of 1710 having belonged to Goldmann and which it names affectionately " Marie-Thérèse" (first name of its wife), concerts with Leopold Stokowski and the Orchestra of Philadelphia. It settles with New York, frequently returning to give concerts in Europe and is regarded as one of the largest violonists of the 20th century: fleeing the spectacular one and the easy effects and forming a unit with its instrument, it is known in particular for its interpretations of works of romantic Musique as well as Sonates and partitas for violin alone of Jean-Sebastien Bach. It continues to give concerts to more than 80 years but must put an end to its career in 1987, at the 83 years age, following a fracture of the hand!
Milstein is also the author of a great number of arrangements for violin as of S gives rhythm, in particular for the concertos of Beethoven and Brahms.
Named knight of the Legion of honor in 1968, it also accepted a Grammy Award in 1975.
