The rising of 1729

Natchez attack by surprised the French camp of Fort Rosalie the November 28th 1729. They break the expectant mothers and make tens of prisoners. They massacre in two hours more than 200 colonists.

The French counteract the following year, allied with the Choctaw S. In 1731, after the catch of strong Natchez, 427 are sold like slaves and are taken along to Saint-Domingue. Others flee and disperse.

Social organization

The Natchez company, contrary to much of other Amerindian groups, was treated on a hierarchical basis in four groups directed by a Grand Sun which one can compare to a king. This one was often transferred onto a litter. At the beginning of the 18th century, the French installed in Louisiana attend the funeral of the Grande Queen during which are organized human sacrifices, as for those of the Large Sun.

Natchez honoured their divinities in temples: in one of them, crowned fire was to never cease burning. The villages were squared by a network of ways which led to a central place as at the Mound Builders and civilizations mississippiennes.
