Natan Sharansky

Natan Sharansky or Natan Borissovitch Chtcharanski (Hebrew: נתןשרנסקי ; Russian: НатанБорисовичЩаранский), born the January 20th 1948, is the one of most famous Soviet dissidents, anticommunist and Zionist. Today, it is a politician and a writer Israél IEN.

Biography

Born Anatoly Shcharansky (АнатолийБорисовичЩаранский) with Donetsk in Ukraine from an Jewish family, he studies at the Institute of Physics and Technology of Moscow, where he is graduate in mathematics applied.

After being itself considering refused an exit visa for Israel in 1973, it works as interprets for the dissenting Physicien Andreï Sakharov. He becomes also an activist for the Human rights. He is then one of the founders and spokesperson of the Jewish movement so known Refuznik under the name of group Iouri Orlov.

In March 1977, it is stopped and condemned to 13 years of forced labors in July 1978, shown treason and to be a spy on behalf of the the United States. After 16 month of imprisonment in the prison Lefortovo, it is sent in Siberia in a Gulag named Perm 35 where it works during 9 years.

The condition of Sharansky, and more generally of the other political prisoners in the USSR, drew the attention of the diplomats and movements Western for the respect of the Human rights.

In 1986, it is exchanged against a Soviet spy and it immigrates in Israel. It then changes its first name into Natan.

In 1988, Sharansky is elected president of the Zionist Forum , an organization of former activists Soviet Zionists. Sharansky also works for The Jerusalem Report .

In 1989, the US president Ronald Reagan rewards it by decorating it with the medal with peace.

Political career

Sharansky is the president and the founder in 1995 of the political party Yisrael Ba' aliyah (" Israel for the Aliyah ") promoting the integration of the Soviet Jews in the Israeli company. In 1996, they gained 7 seats with the Knesset.

It is one of the founders and the president of the association One Jerusalem which promotes Israeli sovereignty on Jerusalem unified.

It was also:

  • Minister of Industry and Trade of 1996 with 1999;
  • Minister of Interior Department of July 1999 with its resignation in July 2000;
  • principal private secretary of Israeli the Prime Minister and Minister for the house and construction;
  • member of the cabinet of the Israeli government of 2003 with 2005.

He resigns of the government the May 2nd 2005, to protest against the expulsion of the Israeli colonists in accordance with the Disengagement plan of the occupied territories.

He was listed by the magazine Time in the list of the 100 most influential people in 2005.
