Nat Adderley (born with Tampa in Florida the November 25th 1931, died with Lakeland, Florida the January 2nd 2000) is a Cornet tist of American Jazz .

Of its true name Nathaniel Adderley , it is the younger brother of the saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and the father of the pianist Nat Adderley Jr.

Biography

It starts to practice the trumpet before adopting definitively the horn in 1950. From 1951 to 1953, he plays - as besides his brother - in a military orchestra, “36 HT Army Band”. From 1954 to 1955, it belongs to the Big band of Lionel Hampton.

In 1956, it joined, for one year, the quintet of his older brother. Between 1957 and 1958, he plays in the formation of Jay Jay Johnson, then, in 1959, in the big band of Woody Hermann.

From 1959 to 1975, it codirige the group (quintet or sextet) of his/her older brother, “Cannonball”. This formation, very representative of the jazz Hardware bop and the Drunk jazz, is a great success. One sees there passing from the musicians like Yusef Lateef, Wynton Kelly, Joe Zawinul, George Duke, etc

In 1975, after the death of his/her brother, Nat Adderley directs his own groups where have can hear, with the passing of years, of the musicians like Johnny Griffin, Sony Fortune, Vincent Herring, or Antonio Hart.

The popularity of his/her brother “Cannonball” made that the career of Nat Adderley was a little in the shade of that of its elder, even if it recorded many discs under its name. Nat Adderley was however, an excellent soloist, one of the rare specialists in the horn in modern jazz, and a skilful type-setter of topics. Titles like “ Work song ”, “ Jive samba ” or “ The Old country ” became standards of the jazz.

Like his/her brother, Nat Adderley was diabetic. He is amputee of a leg in 1997 because of the complications of this disease, of which he dies 3 years later.
